Who we are

Over the years, we’ve continued to innovate a diverse range of letter-related products that have propelled us to the forefront of Japan’s type foundry industry. With a vast portfolio boasting over 2000 fonts, Morisawa not only caters to the nuances of the Japanese language but also to the unique typographic needs of other East Asian languages.

Who we are

History of Innovation

1920

1920s

Nobuo Morisawa, a typesetter, invented the first Japanese-language phototypesetting machine, driven by the challenge of typesetting complex Japanese characters. Post World War II, Morisawa and his team further improved their machines, leading to a revolution in typesetting by the 1950s.
1950

1950s

In order to meet the increasing demand for phototypesetting machines, Morisawa started producing its own fonts. These machines, capable of typesetting both vertical and horizontal Japanese text, gained popularity among major publishers and newspapers. In response, Morisawa began creating original fonts, establishing a standard for Japanese typography.
1980-2000

1980ー2000s

Morisawa led the way in Japanese typeface development for DTP, partnering with Adobe to create the first Japanese PostScript fonts in 1989. In the 2000s, they released OS-independent OpenType fonts, expanding the industry. In 2005, Morisawa introduced a groundbreaking font subscription service, now available on a cloud-based platform, widely favored by users.
2010

2010s

Morisawa has become a global type foundry, expanding its non-Japanese typeface collection through M&A deals and partnerships with overseas manufacturers like Arphic, Hanyi Fonts, and The Font Bureau.
